Coinbase cbETH Structural Discount and Liquid Staking Token Pricing Surface — Ethereum — 2022–2025
Summary
Coinbase launched cbETH (Coinbase Wrapped Staked ETH) in August 2022 as a liquid representation of ETH staked through Coinbase's institutional and retail staking service. cbETH is an ERC-20 token whose exchange rate to ETH increases over time to reflect staking rewards accruing to the underlying staked ETH. Unlike Lido's stETH — which developed deep liquidity on Curve and across lending protocols, and which gained a redemption path after Ethereum's Shanghai/Shapella upgrade enabled withdrawals in April 2023 — cbETH has:
No redemption mechanism. cbETH holders cannot redeem cbETH for the underlying staked ETH through the cbETH contract or through Coinbase. The only exit path is selling cbETH on a secondary market (DEX or CEX).
Thin secondary-market liquidity. cbETH's primary liquidity pool (cbETH/ETH on Uniswap V3) has historically been shallow relative to the total cbETH supply, making large redemptions price-impactful and disincentivising arbitrageurs from providing the capital needed to close the discount.
A passive-holder distribution base. Coinbase stakers who opted into cbETH received the token as a representation of their stake but did not actively choose to hold a liquid staking derivative. Many of these passive holders became natural sellers, creating persistent sell pressure on the cbETH/ETH market.
The structural discount — cbETH trading below its ETH-value based on the cbETH/ETH exchange rate — has persisted throughout cbETH's existence. The discount magnitude varies with market conditions: it narrows during low-volatility periods when sell pressure is balanced by buyers seeking cbETH exposure, and widens during stress periods when stakers rush to exit and secondary-market liquidity is insufficient.
The cbETH case is structurally instructive because it demonstrates that T14.004 is not limited to adversarial manipulation — the same pricing-surface primitive (redemption-constrained token with thin secondary liquidity) can produce a standing structural discount without any attacker action. The design-level conditions that create the cbETH discount are present, to varying degrees, in all liquid staking tokens that lack contractual redemption.
The cbETH discount is distinct from the LRT depeg events covered by ezETH, eETH, rsETH, and pufETH examples because:
- The LRT depegs were event-driven: a specific market event (EigenLayer withdrawal-cap announcement, airdrop dynamics) triggered the depeg.
- The cbETH discount is structural and persistent: it exists continuously as a design-level outcome, not triggered by a specific event.
Together, the LRT event-driven depegs and the cbETH structural discount bracket the T14.004 spectrum: event-driven depegs represent the acute manifestation; structural discounts represent the chronic manifestation. Both share the same underlying mechanism — redemption-constrained pricing — and both are load-bearing T14.004 surfaces.

The defender lesson is that redemption-mechanism design is the load-bearing T14.004 mitigation: a token with contractual or protocol-enforced redemption at par eliminates the structural discount surface by providing arbitrageurs with a risk-free mechanism to close any discount. Tokens without redemption — cbETH, and to varying degrees the LRTs before EigenLayer implemented withdrawals — are exposed to the T14.004 surface by construction, and the discount magnitude scales with the gap between secondary-market liquidity depth and the largest likely redemption size.
