Summary

Following the 2021-2022 NFT boom, creator royalties — typically 2.5-10% of secondary-sale price, paid to the original creator on each resale — became a load-bearing economic expectation in the Ethereum NFT ecosystem. OpenSea, as the dominant NFT marketplace (~80-90% of Ethereum NFT volume through 2022), implemented on-chain royalty enforcement through the Operator Filter Registry, a tool that allowed creators to block their collections from being listed on marketplaces that did not honour royalties. The trust-substrate shift was structural: what had been marketplace-enforced (a buyer MUST pay the creator's set royalty percentage) became marketplace-optional (a buyer MAY choose to tip the creator). For creators who had built revenue models on the assumption of enforceable royalties — including full-time NFT artists, game-asset creators, and metaverse-land developers — the economic substrate shifted from obligation to gratuity.
