Zondacrypto Exchange CEO-Transition Custody Failure and Alleged Russian Mafia Takeover — Apr 2026 — ~$96M

The exchange was also alleged to have been taken over by a Russian organised-crime group, and the new CEO claimed the exchange was effectively under mafia control. Whether the key-non-transfer was deliberate (the previous CEO withholding keys as insurance or leverage) or accidental (the previous CEO being genuinely unreachable and having failed to document the keys) was unclear. The vulnerability is not technological — multisig, MPC, hardware security modules, and institutional key-custody protocols have been available since the early days of cryptocurrency exchanges (Coinbase, Gemini, and Kraken implemented institutional-grade custody from inception) — but organisational: the exchange chose to operate with a single point of key-knowledge failure.

The alleged Russian organised-crime dimension adds a layer that the QuadrigaCX case lacked: the custody failure may have been instrumental rather than accidental.
